We believe…
What we believe about the Bible
We believe and teach that the Bible (including both the canonical Old and New Testaments) is Divinely inspired; is inerrant in its original autograph; and is to be held as the sole and final authority in all matters of faith and doctrine, life and practice.
What we believe about God
We believe in one God, eternally existent in the three Persons of the Divine Trinity; The Father, The Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.
What we believe about Jesus
We believe that Jesus of Nazareth was and is the promised Messiah; God's only eternally begotten Son; and the only Way of salvation, eternal life, and access to God.
We believe in the actual, literal, physical death of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, and that His death is the only sufficient and acceptable atonement (propitiation) for the sins of mankind.
We believe in the actual, literal, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead by the power of God.
We believe that Jesus Christ actually, literally and physically ascended into heaven, and is currently "seated at the right hand of the Father" (the Almighty and Eternal God).
What we believe about the Virgin Birth
We believe in the actual, literal, physical, and miraculous virgin birth of Jesus who was called The Christ; who in His incarnation was and is fully and truly God, and fully and truly man.
What we believe about the Second Coming of Christ
We believe that that Jesus the Messiah (Christ) will actually, literally, physically return in power and great glory "at the time appointed by the Father" (i.e., "at the end of the age"), to judge all of mankind (both the living and the dead, the believers and the unbelievers); assigning to those who are truly and spiritually 'born again' and obedient believers to eternal life, and condemning all unbelievers (those who have rejected Christ), to eternal separation from God, and eternal perdition and punishment in Hell.
What we believe about the Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit (Who is fully and truly God), is given to all true believers as a seal of their faith in Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord.
We believe that this self-same Holy Spirit has also been given to the Church to empower it by grace to accomplish the mission given it by Christ Himself. That is, to reach out to a lost and dying world with the only true Gospel of Hope; through faith in Jesus Christ.
What we believe about the Gifts of the Spirit
We believe that this empowerment is manifest in the life of the believer through the fruit, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including those New Testament gifts defined in Romans chapter 12, I Corinthians chapters 12 through 14, and Ephesians chapter 4. We firmly believe all of these gifts are to be exercised decently, and in an orderly manner (1 Corinthians 14:40).
What we believe about hell
We believe in an actual and literal Hell, which the Bible announces was created for the Devil (Satan) and his angels. But, that mankind, who willfully reject the salvation offered through the death of Jesus Christ, will also share in this judgment, and the eternal torment that Hell is.
What we believe about the devil
We believe in an actual and literal devil (who is also called Lucifer or the Satan), who willfully and deliberately rebelled against the rightful and sovereign rule of God, and who has, therefore, become the enemy of God and of the people of God. He is not equal with God (he never was), for he is a created being - a fallen angel.
What we believe about humanity
We believe that Man was created perfect by God, but that through the knowledgeable and willful sin of Adam (which was rebellion), all of mankind inherited a sin nature that was and is diametrically opposed to the rightful and sovereign will, and rule of God.
We believe and teach that God has called those individuals who are truly His, to a life of Holiness. In essence this means, we are to live a life that is in all ways, separated from sin, and by contrast, separated unto Him - a living sacrifice to God, holy and acceptable to Him.
Therefore, as the Scriptures teach, so we believe...
(The following addresses some of the more controversial issues of our day. And, though we do desire to truly love the sinner, sin must be exposed as sin. For, the truth alone will set us free!)
1) Homosexuality, as both an act and a lifestyle, is a gross and willful perversion of God's natural order and His physical design and limitations for man and woman (Romans 1:26-27). As such, it can only be categorized as a behavior which entraps and eventually enslaves those who practice it. Therefore, it must be rejected an act of sexual deviance and an expression of unnatural affection. By Jesus' own example, our deepest desire is to love the sinner (including those engaged in this lifestyle), and bring them to faith and freedom in Christ. However, to do this, we must recognize sin as sin;
2) Marriage is God ordained, not man-created! And as such, the only natural marriage is between one man and one woman only (Genesis 2:21-24) - any and all deviations from this revealed, ancient and traditional pattern are a contradiction of God's Word, a deviation from His design for the physical union of man and woman, and are to be rejected; and
3) Abortion is the taking of an innocent human life, and as such is to be, in all forms rejected, being in no way simply, "a matter of individual autonomy and personal choice." (Proverbs 6:16-17). God is the Giver of life. And as such, He alone must be the ultimate Determiner of life and death. God's word defines the limitations restraints for taking human life. We are allowed to defend ourselves; we are allowed to protect our families and possessions. But, taking the life of an innocent person - child or adult - is sin of the most heinous form.
Please Note: This above list of beliefs is not, and should not be considered, exhaustive. It is simply a listing of some of the more important beliefs held by the leadership and congregation of Spanaway Christian Center. Other beliefs are also held to be critical to the spiritual life and health of the follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. Space, however, does not afford us the ability to mention them all.
If questions concerning doctrine arise, the Leadership Team - in particular the Elders - are commissioned by Scripture with the responsibility to investigate and establish doctrine for this congregation. In all matters of faith and doctrine, their decision is final.
